I started flying in the UK in 1985 in using a home built single seat Trike (Tarjani) with a Solar Wings Typhoon (hang glider) wing – this was great fun to fly. Microlight regulations were then introduced into the UK and to stay legal I purchased a Solar Wings (later to become Pegasus) XL two seat trike powered by a Rotax 447. With this trike I gained my UK PPL Microlight license at the Solar Wings Clench Common training school. I moved to Florida in 1989, obtained my Private Pilot Certificate, and flew Cessna 152s and 172s for a while. After a visit to Sun ‘n Fun I purchased a Rans S12 kit with a Rotax 582 engine. Sun ‘n Fun is large EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) air show and fly-in held each year in April at Lake Land FL – well worth a visit if you have time. I built and then flew the S12 for over 400 hours. While I had the Rans I also gained an instrument rating (not in the Rans!) using a Piper Cherokee. I decided to go back to Trike flying, so purchased a Mainair Rapier Trike with a Rotax 503 and became a USUA Flight Instructor after training at Herlong airfield in Jacksonville FL. I operated Atlantic Sport Aviation Inc. from Titusville Airpark FL giving WSC training in the Rapier and Ultra-light airplane training in the Rans S12. The training went very well so I purchased a Mainair Blade 912 and imported a number of Mainair trikes into the US. We exhibited Mainair trikes at a few Sun ‘n Fun air shows – with the Blade we demonstrated the first ever Rotax 912 powered trike at Sun ‘n Fun -comments heard - a 912 is far too much power for a trike and will never catch on! As a USUA instructor I trained students on a variety of Trikes including Airborne both Wizard and Streak wings , Air Creation, North Wing, Mainair, Pegasus - now combined to form P& M Aviation I also built and flew in this period a Quicksilver MX on floats, which has fun to fly over the St John’s River.I’m a CFI Light Sport both Airplane and WSC, completing my airplane CFI training using a Valor A22 at Southern Maine Aviation and gaining the WSC endorsement at Crow Island MA using Airborne trikes.Presently owner of Altanta Sport Flying LLC providing Trike and Airplane instruction. In operation since 2011.Present aircraft are a P&M Aviation Quik GTR Trike and a Rans S12S airplane.
